TOW #27 - Too Scared to Report Sexual Abuse. The Fear: Deportation.

Ever since the 2016 presidential election, there was an increase in Latinos speaking up for themselves. Undocumented Latinos who are impacted by domestic violence fear that bringing their case to court will attract government officials who want to evict them from the United States of America. Donald Trump’s election made it clear that he was going to work throughout his presidency to stop immigrants from entering the United States and those who are undocumented fear to create attention because they don’t want to leave America. In the article, Too Scared to Report Sexual Abuse. The Fear: Deportation, by Jennifer Medina, it is evident that the fear always had occurred for people to report their domestic violence, but it has dramatically increased this past year for Latinos once Trump entered office. The number reporting rate decreased by more than 40 percent.

It is important for people to be able to have a voice but with a president who is disrespectful towards people who just want to live in a country that is supposed to represent freedom, it is very difficult for Latinos to speak up for themselves. No matter who the person is, they should feel comfortable at least talking to someone so they do not hide in their pain of dealing with the domestic violence by themselves. Some would even use a different name so they were able to report the domestic violence but they didn’t have to share their identity with the world. Unfortunately, it has become obvious through the decrease in calls that Latinos have a great fear of being sent back over the borders but police argue that their way of dealing with crimes has not changed and the White House does not control how they act on different situations.

This article expresses to the audience the importance of reporting domestic violence no matter the situation. It informs the audience how the presidential election deeply impacted the amount undocumented Latinos have been reporting domestic violence. This leads them to have to face this violence way longer than they could be if they just called the police to help them get out of a very difficult situation.

TOW #26 - Trump Saved Carrier Jobs. These Workers Weren't as Lucky

Donald Trump caused around 700 workers of carrier jobs to be lost. In Nelson D. Schwartz’s article, Trump Saved Carrier Jobs. These Workers Weren’t as Lucky. He wanted to preserve the carrier jobs to stay in Indiana instead of moving to Mexico. Unfortunately for every person working for a Carrier company, only 800 out of 1,400 jobs were saved. One of the branches, Huntington which was operated by UTEC was not as lucky as some of the other branches. Around 70% of the Huntington Count voted for President Donald Trump (New York Times) but now they have been deeply affected by Trump’s action during his first few months of presidency. Even when President Donald Trump admitted to keeping the Indianapolis plant open, the citizens didn’t blame him for not being able to save as many jobs as he could have saved. Tami Barnett, a worker at the Indianapolis branch, even admitted she was upset that her job wasn’t saved but she still fully supports President Trump as he still was able to save some jobs in the branch. Even though he was able to save Indianapolis, he was unable to save Huntington. The workers in this branch were greatly affected as many jobs were lost. Donald Trump was said in this article to have enjoyed working with the United Technologies, and will continue to work with major companies to try to increase “American manufacturing, job creation and economic growth” (White House Spokesman). By telling the American public, President Donald Trump brought reliance upon himself as he needs to strive to improve the working field of every American citizen.

Schwartz appeals to pathos in order to make it clear that many jobs were lost in 2017, but there were also many jobs saved. Schwartz also addresses that even though people lost their jobs, they are still pleased with their choice of elected President Donald Trump as President of the United States. Even though they are upset with losing their jobs, they are happy that there were more jobs saved than lost. The author uses their emotion to address the problem Trump faced, and even though people were greatly affected by his decision, he still has an immense amount of supporters on his side even when their jobs were taken from them. They also appeal to logos to display to the audience the facts of how many jobs were actually saved and how many were lost. Trump was able to save 800 of the 1,400 jobs in a branch. This shows the audience that he was able to help more than hurt the people of the United States.

TOW #25 - A judge rules Trump may have incited violence … and Trump again has his own mouth to blame

Words hurt; especially when a person is a large political figure. They believe they are able to say ridiculous things and get away with them. This person depicts Donald Trump the current President of the United States. In The New York Times article “A judge rules Trump may have incited violence … and Trump again has his own mouth to blameby Aaron Blake, Blake explains that Donald Trump and his administration need to back up everything Trump states to the American public as lying. People should not truly believe what he tells the world because some of the things that come out of his mouth are inaccurate. There should be no reason for a president to tell their audience anything but the truth. Even though everyone knows presidents lie. There is a difference from telling the world a complete lie and keeping the people from knowing the complete truth. Through many of Trump’s speeches he has said a lot of negative things towards people in his audience who are protesting, and also against people he believes should not be in America, for example, Muslims. He has made this perfectly clear he does not believe Muslims should be in America. Trump has even made a ban against all Muslims. His administration tried to argue that the ban wasn’t directed at Muslims but Trump never came out to apologize or speak for himself after the first Muslim ban was halted. Trump’s team have to continuously defend his words as they have stated, “Trump's words shouldn't be taken at face value — that he didn't mean what he actually, literally said” (Blake). People should not have to defend what presidents say directly to an audience of millions of American citizens. The President should be known for respecting, and admiring the American people, they shouldn’t have to be hiding behind their administration every time they say the wrong words to people. President Donald Trump may have been elected the 45th President of the United States, but he has continuously shown his lack of respect of human beings and his lack of respect for his own job.

TOW #24 - Going Under the Knife, With Eyes and Ears Wide Open

Having to get surgery is a very anxious thing for a person. Their life hangs in the balance of a surgeon who went through years of training in order to gain the experience required to save a person’s life. In the New York Times article Going Under the Knife, With Eyes and Ears Wide Open by Jan Hoffman, keeping the patient awake is starting to become a more accepted, more appreciated thing from patients as they are able to view what the doctors are doing inside of their bodies. Most of these surgeries are occurring for minor surgeries that help keep the patient more involved with their surgery. They also occur with patients who need dangerous brain surgery. When these surgeries take place, it is essential so the doctor is able to successfully perform the surgery with knowledge that the patient is awake, and alive. Both of these reasons to keep the patient awake has been beneficial for a successful surgery. Being able to see the surgery brings comfort to the patient. If the patient was not given this opportunity, the person may not feel comfortable with going through with their surgery because they will not be able to know what is going on inside of their bodies. I believe that it is important for a person to have the option, because then even if they don't take that opportunity, they would have had all of their options. In the article, Hoffman states, “Patient satisfaction, however, tends to be high” (Hoffman). Being able to have a comfortable patient throughout the entire process is very important for doctors as they want to have a comfortable relationship with their patient. By being able to provide them with everything they need, doctors are also able to perform the surgery without the patient having to go under anesthesia. This requires less pre-surgery and post-surgery work that the patient has to deal with. The option to stay awake during surgery has not only provided doctors with a way to be able to talk to their patients throughout the entire surgery, but provided the patients with a way to understand everything that was going on inside their body during the entire surgery.

TOW #23 - Impeach Trump Cartoon

In this political cartoon by Steve Benson on USA Today, there is a man in blue holding a sign in capital letters that states, “IMPEACH PRESIDENT TRUMP”. On November 8, 2016, the United States of America voted for their next president of the United States. The election that terrified many American citizens came down to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Both of these president-elects had their supporters but they also had people who were against them becoming president. Many people searched through the depth of the internet to find evidence for why Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should become the next President of the United States. After November 8th occurred, many were devastated in these results hoping that Donald Trump who became president of the United States would be impeached. Trump was never given a chance at presidency before people started to protest against him. These people who followed Hillary Clinton during her race for presidency, continued to back her up even after the election occurred. They still showed support of her ideas and what she was truly trying to fight for during her candidacy. However, these people need to realize that if they impeach Donald Trump, his ideas would remain with Pence who is currently the vice president. There would have to be a way to turn back time for these people to fully receive the leadership they believed would have been positive for this country.

The rhetorical devices used in this cartoon are imagery and its appeal to pathos. The imagery is shown to express the man’s determination to protest Trump’s impeachment. He is wearing the color blue which demonstrates democracy and shows the side he took during the 2016 election. The cartoon appeals to pathos as it makes people feel emotion about the election. Whether they are angry at this cartoon or can easily connect with it. I believe that this cartoon proved its purpose as it clearly identifies with people who believed Hillary Clinton would have been the better president. These people are against Donald Trump’s ideas and believe he should be impeached because he will not be the president that the United States needs for the American citizens.

TOW #22 - Eat, Pray, Love

In the memoir Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Gilbert shares her story of how she turned her life around after she went through a very difficult divorce. She faced depression through a period of her life as she tried to pick life back up. This memoir is about Gilbert’s experiences in Italy, India and Indonesia where she was able to obtain good food, her spiritual side, and love. All three of these locations helps Gilbert rehabilitate her mind as she grows into a stronger person. Elizabeth Gilbert is and American author best known for this memoir, which has become a New York Times Best Seller. Elizabeth Gilbert wrote this memoir to share her story with the world about how she was able to learn how to live and enjoy her life after all of these positive experiences she had.
The rhetorical devices used in Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir are metaphors, and personification. She uses both of these rhetorical devices in order to enhance her memoir and make her audience feel they are able to connect with the memoir better. Both of these rhetorical devices are used throughout her memoir to help her successfully deliver her story she wants to tell to her audience. One metaphor she uses she compares emotions to a slave. She describes how one’s thoughts are deeply influenced by emotions. An example of personification used in Gilbert’s memoir is when she describes how much she loved the pizza she ate. She questions if the pizza might actually love her back. She uses this rhetorical device to effectively describe how she has become much happier than she was previously. She uses the pizza to describe that there is hope for her life to become better.

I believe that Elizabeth Gilbert proved her purpose because she successfully shares her experiences with the audience and proves how her life changed for the better. Gilbert has proved that with determination that if one wants to change their life around, they have the ability to do it.

TOW #21- Oscar's Mistake

After the Oscar’s occurred, there was a lot of controversy due to the mess up for which movie won best picture. This cartoon from the New York Time Syndicate displays all of the confusion that occurred as the Oscar’s corrected their mistake of announcing La La Land as the winners instead of Moonlight. When La La Land was announced, the cast and crew who were at the venue at the time were very excited. They stood up and went on to the stage thrilled that their movie was being acknowledged for the best award at the Oscars. Unfortunately, the actual winners of this award was Moonlight, making this the biggest mistake that has occurred in the Oscars. This mistake reminds me of when Steve Harvey said the wrong name for Miss America. However, the reactions at the Oscars were very controlled as they were very calm and the cast and crew of La La Land showed their excitement for Moonlight. The man in the cartoon is the director of Moonlight and his face represents all of the people because they were all extremely confused about what had happened.
The two rhetorical devices used in this cartoon are imagery and symbolism. They effectively used imagery to represent the two movies, Moonlight and La La Land. The two people are drawn as if they were in a relay race and the Oscar trophy is being passed. The man’s confusion is clearly displayed on his face and the exaggerated excited face is displayed on the woman’s face who most likely represents Emma Stone. The symbolism in this cartoon is shown by the moon in the sky which represents the movie Moonlight. This moon is towering over everything like it is the most important part of the piece. The woman is wearing a dress and in the same famous position of Emma Stone’s character in La La Land. During the Oscar’s, Emma Stone had just won best actress and she is handing the trophy off to Moonlight for best picture.

I believe that the author proved their purpose because the author clearly displays the emotions people were feeling when Moonlight won the Oscar instead of La La Land. The author effectively shows the audience the reactions of the people and how the mistake made one movie surprised and one movie excited.

TOW #20 - After Shootings, Indians are Wary of Coming to U.S.

On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called Defense of Fort M’Henry. These words were soon turned into “The Star-Spangled Banner” and known as the national anthem for the United States of America. People from all over the world would travel to America to obtain a better life. However recently in America, people have felt very unsafe and uncomfortable living in the country that used to be known for its freedom. On February 22, 2017, a devastating shooting took place that took the lives of two Indian engineers in a Kansas bar by a drunk man questioned their immigration status. Someone asked “Why do you even need to go to the States? Why do you need to go to a country that doesn’t want you?” (Sharma). People all over the country are experiencing this doubt of whether it is worth staying in the States. They have become very aware after this shooting how unsafe it is for Indians to live their lives throughout America. Ever since Donald Trump has become president people have become more observant of the races that are not white. They question whether they are officially citizens of the United States and do anything in their power to try and prove they are not citizens, even by killing them.

The rhetorical devices used in this New York Times article After Shootings, Indians Are Wary of Coming to U.S. by Ellen Barry and Nida Najar, are the appeal to pathos and the appeal to ethos. The author uses a lot of true examples from people all around the world to help show the audience how the views of Americans has deeply affected the lives of every single person on this earth. People are scared to live in the United States and it is Trump’s beliefs that have created an increase in violence in the United States. The author also uses these examples to make themselves credible as they use real life examples of how the shooting affected the lives of many people throughout the world.

I believe that the authors proved their purpose because they effectively proved the effects the shooting in the Kansas bar had on people all over the world. People have become afraid to live in the United States, and honestly after Trump became president, I am too.

TOW #19 - Trump Pursues His Attack on Sweden, With Scant Evidence

In the New York Times article Trump Pursues His Attack on Sweden, With Scant Evidence by Sewell Chan and Christina Anderson, the authors inform the United States of America about how Trump attacks Sweden based of unreliable news from television. Ever since Donald Trump became president, he has been very involved in social media news and what is being said about him by the American citizens. President Donald Trump tweeted out, “Give the public a break – The FAKE NEWS media is trying to say that large scale immigration in Sweden is working out just beautifully. NOT!” Some of Trump’s reactions clearly display his opinions on the topic and how he is unwilling to view different perspectives. This attack on Sweden clearly shows how he will act on what he believes in, even if it is not right for America. This article shows the audience how Trump relies on television news even if it is not accurate.

The rhetorical devices used in this article are the appeal to logos and ethos. By appealing to logos and ethos, the authors are able to provide the audience with accurate information involving the Sweden attack by President Donald Trump and inform America the reasons for this attack occurring on Sweden. This article also provides the audience with an immense amount of reliable sources to add on to both of the authors credibility. They include many people who have a lot of insight on this devastating event that was caused by President Donald Trump. By using these two rhetorical devices, the authors effectively prove that they wanted to inform the American public about the reasons the attacks on Sweden occurred and how they impacted the entire world.

I believe that the authors proved their purpose because they effectively show America the reasons President Trump attacked Sweden. They make it evident that the reasons Trump attacked Sweden were due to television and his beliefs that they were reliable enough sources in order to actually order this attack.

TOW #18 - Trump Tweets

In a New York Times Syndicate, Turner created a political cartoon showing the impact of Donald Trump’s tweets has on the United States of America. Donald Trump is portrayed as a bird who is “tweeting” on a tree branch. The statue of liberty, a politician, and a civilian are on the ground looking up at Trump in disgust and disapproval. All of Donald Trump’s tweets on twitter are represented in this political cartoon as a disgrace to the American public. He is using his new power as president to order people around and express his anger when things do not go his way. The person on the right of this political cartoon looks like a truck driver who originally voted for Trump but became frustrated with not getting what Trump said during the process of becoming President of the United States.  Donald trump’s position is higher than the others in this political cartoon to represent Trump’s power over the United States of America. This political cartoon is an accurate representation of the effects Donald Trump has had on America.
The rhetorical devices used in this political cartoon are imagery and symbolism. There are subtle colors used in this cartoon that represent the figures that are used. The images are in specific locations to show the importance of the figures represented in the political cartoon. Donald Trump’s face shows how focused he is on sending all of his tweets out to the American public to express all of his feelings and his opinions on the politics going on in America. The other rhetorical device used in this political cartoon is symbolism. Even though Donald Trump is actually represented on this political cartoon, he is in the position a bird would make when sitting on a tree branch. He represents that he is now in control of the United States of America and he knows everything that is going on. The Statue of America represents many Americans who were disgusted when Trump became president.
The author made this cartoon to demonstrate the impact Trump’s presidency has already had on the people of the United States of America. The audience is the people reading Donald Trump’s tweets who only see his perspective. I believe Turner was successful because it is clear that Trump’s tweets have affected every person living in America.

IRB #3 - Eat, Pray, Love

For the third marking period three independent reading book, I am going to read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. This book is about self-discovery. By traveling the world, Elizabeth Gilbert left her entire life behind, her husband, and a successful job, to fulfill what she felt her heart desired. She travels to three different countries with three different cultures to help her find what she wanted in life. She went to Italy for food, and pleasure, she went to India for pleasure, and she went to Indonesia for enjoyment. All three of these countries on Earth, helped Elizabeth Gilbert with finding her true self.

TOW #17 - Andre Agassi's Open

In Andre Agassi’s autobiography Open, Agassi uses his personal experiences to express the positive and negative effects professional tennis can have on a person. Andre Agassi spent his whole life playing tennis and as he grew up it became evident that he would play tennis as his career. Agassi did very well as a professional tennis player; he won many major tournaments like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. However, as he continued to play tennis there were many injuries he faced. Being a professional tennis player is rigorous, for Agassi, he struggled with constant back pain as he continuously tried to win a title at a tennis tournament. This extreme pain led to Agassi’s retirement.
The rhetorical devices used in Agassi’s book are his appeal to ethos and pathos. Agassi makes it clear to his audience how much tennis impacted his life. Not only was it a sport he grew up despising but it created many physical injuries. Due to a wrist and back injury, he had to slow down his rate of playing matches which dropped him from number one to 141st in the world. It took him an entire year of physically demanding exercises to become one of the best tennis players in the world again when he reached number sixth in the world. Agassi appeals to ethos because he has experienced what it was like to be a professional tennis player and he uses his personal experience to show the audience the physical, and mental demands playing tennis professionally has on a person.

In this autobiography, Agassi’s audience is able to relate to the injuries Agassi sustained and the demands tennis has had on his life. The audience was to inform tennis players who have watched Agassi play on the court what Agassi really went through to be the number one tennis player in the world. Agassi wants his audience to know how much work it really took to keep a toned body and a healthy relationship with people outside of tennis. I believe that Andre Agassi proves his purpose because he uses experiences that had a great impact on him to successfully prove the effect tennis has on people.

TOW #16 - “Defiant Voices Flood U.S. Cities as Women Rally for Rights”

All over the world, women joined forces to protest against Trump.  This protest occurred on January 21, 2017 the day after Donald J. Trump became the President of the United States. These protesters set out to protect the rights they believed President Trump would diminish. In the New York Times article, “Defiant Voices Flood U.S. Cities as Women Rally for Rights” 53 percent of white women voted for Mr. Trump” (Chira and Alcindor) which shows that women could look past his rude comments due to their belief he could benefit America as president. This protest occurred after the inauguration of a president that set gender views into question like never before.

The rhetorical devices used in this article are an appeal to pathos and to ethos. This article appeals to pathos by using many examples of the reasons people were in the protest. The reasons presented in this article show the audience how the results of who was going to be the next president angered many people and made them lose hope in America’s future. Even though there were people who were happy when Trump became president, many readers felt the emotion that the protestors felt. This article also appeals to ethos by providing comments from both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This provides the audience with trust about the accuracy of the article.

In this article, I believe that the authors proved their purpose because it clearly informs the audience the reasons for the protest and how the 2016 election affected people all over the world. People all around the world have different political views but this article represents how people can unite together to fight for a cause they believe in deeply.

TOW #15 - After the Presidential Election

In this political cartoon by Charlie Daniel in USA Today, the reaction of the people after the devastating losses for both the presidential election and the college football championship are represented by the man sitting in the chair. Regardless of the event he was watching his shocked face portrayed many other people who were also watching these events that were taking place. The woman on the right shows the oblivious Americans who did not watch the end results of either the election or the football championship. This shows how people were expecting one side to win but instead the results for both the election and the championship were appalling to many people. This cartoon occurs the day after one of these events as it provides options that include the election, the championship, or both. America was left devastated after the election occurred. People did not know what to expect after Donald Trump won the presidential election.
The rhetorical devices used in this political cartoon is imagery and its appeal to pathos. The imagery shown in this political cartoon demonstrates the reactions of people living in America. The shocked face on the man shows how confused and worried he was about the results of both of the events. This imagery is very effective for this cartoon because it helps the audience visualize the reactions of people all across America. It also appeals to pathos because the emotions people felt are displayed in this political cartoon.

The aftermath of the 2016 presidential election was devastating for many people. Even though there were people who were satisfied after the election, this cartoon represents the many people who were shocked and confused. These reactions were normal for many people as they faced the consequencesa of the presidential election results. Charlie Daniel is a cartoonist who addresses the everyday issues in America. I believe Daniel successfully proved how many Americans reacted because the use of imagery and appeal to pathos demonstrates the effects the results of the election and even the football championship had on American citizens.

TOW #14 - “Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Suspect Faces Death Penalty”

In Kelli Kennedy’s article in Time “Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Suspect Faces Death Penalty” the consequences of the shooting in Fort Lauderdale leave the shooter at the highest penalty. This shooting killed five people and wounded six other people in a terminal in a Florida airport. Investigators are still investigating the shooters motives for this shooting. Previously, the shooter walked into an FBI office leaving his infant and gun inside his car. He was taken to a mental health evaluation and his weapon was seized from him but returned only four days later which led to significant consequences. He was released after not being evaluated as mentally ill. In order to carry a gun in an airport, the gun has to be in a checked bag that is unloaded. However, the shooter took advantage of this rule by bringing a gun with him on the plane that later led to a devastating shooting. The court date that determines the shooter’s future is set for Monday as the shooter is held in federal custody without the opportunity for bail.
This article appeals to pathos in order to display the devastating effects that this shooting had on the civilians in and out of the Florida airport. Many in the terminal will deal with the aftermath of the shooting. The families of the five people killed are going to have to cope with the loss of their loved ones. Due to this shooting, many people are going to be affected and this article helps contribute to the devastation people are feeling.  This article also appeals to ethos by providing the audience with statements from the FBI and people who unfortunately witnessed this tragic event. By using credible sources, Kennedy proves that this article is a reliable source on the shooting in the Florida airport.
This article informs the readers about the tragic shooting that occurred on January 6, 2017. Having the knowledge that this shooting caused the shooter to face a death penalty, helps people cope with the effects of losing their loved ones. I believe that the author effectively proved her purpose because she proved the impact this shooting has had throughout America. Even though this event has left a significant impact on many people, the shooter is going to face the consequences of killing five innocent people.
