TOW #16 - “Defiant Voices Flood U.S. Cities as Women Rally for Rights”
All over the world, women joined
forces to protest against Trump. This
protest occurred on January 21, 2017 the day after Donald J. Trump became the
President of the United States. These protesters set out to protect the rights
they believed President Trump would diminish. In the New York Times article, “Defiant Voices Flood U.S. Cities as Women
Rally for Rights” 53 percent of white women voted for Mr. Trump” (Chira and Alcindor) which
shows that women could look past his rude comments due to their belief he could
benefit America as president. This protest occurred after the inauguration of a
president that set gender views into question like never before.
The
rhetorical devices used in this article are an appeal to pathos and to ethos. This
article appeals to pathos by using many examples of the reasons people were in
the protest. The reasons presented in this article show the audience how the
results of who was going to be the next president angered many people and made
them lose hope in America’s future. Even though there were people who were
happy when Trump became president, many readers felt the emotion that the
protestors felt. This article also appeals to ethos by providing comments from
both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This provides the audience with trust
about the accuracy of the article.
In
this article, I believe that the authors proved their purpose because it
clearly informs the audience the reasons for the protest and how the 2016
election affected people all over the world. People all around the world have
different political views but this article represents how people can unite
together to fight for a cause they believe in deeply.

TOW #15 - After the Presidential Election
In this political cartoon by
Charlie Daniel in USA Today, the reaction of the people after the devastating losses
for both the presidential election and the college football championship are
represented by the man sitting in the chair. Regardless of the event he was
watching his shocked face portrayed many other people who were also watching
these events that were taking place. The woman on the right shows the oblivious
Americans who did not watch the end results of either the election or the
football championship. This shows how people were expecting one side to win but
instead the results for both the election and the championship were appalling
to many people. This cartoon occurs the day after one of these events as it
provides options that include the election, the championship, or both. America
was left devastated after the election occurred. People did not know what to
expect after Donald Trump won the presidential election.
The rhetorical devices used in this
political cartoon is imagery and its appeal to pathos. The imagery shown in
this political cartoon demonstrates the reactions of people living in America.
The shocked face on the man shows how confused and worried he was about the
results of both of the events. This imagery is very effective for this cartoon
because it helps the audience visualize the reactions of people all across
America. It also appeals to pathos because the emotions people felt are
displayed in this political cartoon.
The aftermath of the 2016
presidential election was devastating for many people. Even though there were
people who were satisfied after the election, this cartoon represents the many
people who were shocked and confused. These reactions were normal for many
people as they faced the consequencesa of the presidential election results.
Charlie Daniel is a cartoonist who addresses the everyday issues in America. I
believe Daniel successfully proved how many Americans reacted because the use
of imagery and appeal to pathos demonstrates the effects the results of the
election and even the football championship had on American citizens.

TOW #14 - “Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Suspect Faces Death Penalty”
In Kelli Kennedy’s article in Time “Fort
Lauderdale Airport Shooting Suspect Faces Death Penalty” the consequences of
the shooting in Fort Lauderdale leave the shooter at the highest penalty. This
shooting killed five people and wounded six other people in a terminal in a
Florida airport. Investigators are still investigating the shooters motives for
this shooting. Previously, the shooter walked into an FBI office leaving his
infant and gun inside his car. He was taken to a mental health evaluation and
his weapon was seized from him but returned only four days later which led to
significant consequences. He was released after not being evaluated as mentally
ill. In order to carry a gun in an airport, the gun has to be in a checked bag
that is unloaded. However, the shooter took advantage of this rule by bringing
a gun with him on the plane that later led to a devastating shooting. The court
date that determines the shooter’s future is set for Monday as the shooter is
held in federal custody without the opportunity for bail.
This article appeals to pathos in
order to display the devastating effects that this shooting had on the
civilians in and out of the Florida airport. Many in the terminal will deal
with the aftermath of the shooting. The families of the five people killed are
going to have to cope with the loss of their loved ones. Due to this shooting,
many people are going to be affected and this article helps contribute to the devastation
people are feeling. This article also
appeals to ethos by providing the audience with statements from the FBI and
people who unfortunately witnessed this tragic event. By using credible
sources, Kennedy proves that this article is a reliable source on the shooting
in the Florida airport.
This article informs the readers
about the tragic shooting that occurred on January 6, 2017. Having the
knowledge that this shooting caused the shooter to face a death penalty, helps
people cope with the effects of losing their loved ones. I believe that the
author effectively proved her purpose because she proved the impact this
shooting has had throughout America. Even though this event has left a significant
impact on many people, the shooter is going to face the consequences of killing
five innocent people.
